Tanna, and standing at the rim of an active volcano

One of the few accessible volcanoes where you can look directly into the crater. It takes effort to reach.

Mount Yasur on Tanna, in southern Vanuatu, has been erupting more or less continuously for centuries. It is among the most accessible active volcanoes anywhere — you drive most of the way and walk the last stretch to the rim.

What it is actually like

You stand on the crater edge, at dusk, and watch explosions throw material up from the vent below. There is a sound you feel through the ground before you hear it.

Access depends on the alert level, set by the local geohazards department and enforced. At higher levels the rim closes entirely, and that decision is not negotiable.

One concrete thing to do

Go at dusk, not in daylight. The eruptions are visible during the day but the effect is completely different once it is dark enough to see the glow. Most operators time the trip for this; confirm when booking.

Getting there

Fly from Port Vila to Tanna, about 40 minutes, then roughly two hours by 4WD across the island on rough track. The transfer is part of the day.

Where to stay

Bungalows near the volcano side, or in Lenakel on the west coast. Village-run accommodation is common and simple.

The honest caveat

This is genuinely a volcano. People have been killed at Yasur. Follow the guide, stay behind the marked line, and accept it if the alert level closes the rim — that happens, and no refund argument changes geology.

Checked early 2026; confirm alert level before travelling.
